Xi Jinping Visits Russia During Victory Day Amid Drone Strikes

Share

On May 7, 2025, Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow for a four-day visit to attend Victory Day, a holiday that celebrates Russia’s victory over Nazi Germany in 1945. This year is extra special because it marks the 80th anniversary of that historic moment.

At the same time, there were drone attacks on Moscow, which Russia says were launched by Ukraine. The drones caused several problems in the city, including the temporary closure of airports, which affected around 60,000 travelers.

Despite these security concerns, President Xi was welcomed with a full ceremony, including a military band. His visit shows that China and Russia are continuing to strengthen their friendship. President Xi said he hopes to build more “mutual trust” with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russia reported that its defense forces shot down 19 drones, and said more than 500 were destroyed across the region in the past day. Russia has called the attacks acts of terrorism, while Ukraine has not officially commented on the strikes.

To make sure the Victory Day events happen peacefully, President Putin announced a 3-day ceasefire from May 8 to May 10. However, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked for a 30-day truce to help reduce tensions and protect civilians.

Leaders from other countries — like Brazil and Vietnam — have also traveled to Russia for the event. The celebrations are expected to include military parades, speeches, and tributes to veterans.
