The Indian government has approved the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat, to preserve and showcase India’s rich maritime history, which spans over 4,500 years. Led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Union Cabinet, this project will highlight India’s ancient maritime achievements and promote tourism, create jobs, and celebrate the country’s cultural legacy.
Project Overview
The NMHC will be a world-class museum showcasing India’s maritime history from ancient to modern times. Lothal, an ancient Harappan site known for its dockyards and maritime trade routes, is the ideal location. The project will be executed in two phases:
- Phase 1A: Under construction with over 60% progress, expected to be completed by 2025.
- Phase 1B: Recently approved, this phase will include a lighthouse museum and galleries on maritime history, with support from the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships.
Phase 2 will focus on further development through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), aiming to attract global visitors and researchers. A governing society will oversee the project’s development and operations.
Economic Impact
The NMHC will create approximately 22,000 jobs, including 15,000 direct and 7,000 indirect roles. The project is expected to boost the local economy by attracting tourists, researchers, and scholars, benefiting local businesses and communities.
Vision and Legacy
The NMHC is part of Prime Minister Modi’s vision to highlight India’s maritime legacy, positioning Lothal as a global hub for maritime research and education. By celebrating India’s ancient maritime power, the NMHC will restore Lothal’s significance and attract global interest in India’s historical and cultural heritage.
