Before entering the entertainment world, Potdar led a diverse career. He served as an Indian Army captain, later worked as a professor in Rewa, and joined Indian Oil, where he served in an executive capacity for nearly 25 years. His acting journey began around the age of 44, initially as a hobby, eventually becoming a prolific presence across screen and stage.

With a career spanning over four decades, Potdar enriched more than 125 Hindi and Marathi films and nearly 100 television serials, not to mention several plays and advertisements. His filmography boasts titles such as Aakrosh, Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Parinda, Rangeela, Vaastav, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dabangg 2, Ventilator, and notably, 3 Idiots.

His brief role as a college professor in Rajkumar Hirani’s blockbuster 3 Idiots became a cultural moment, thanks to the now-viral line “Arey, kehna kya chahte ho?“—which continues to resonate through memes and everyday references.

Tributes poured in from fans and colleagues alike. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta described it as a “privilege” to work with Potdar, while media channels like Star Pravah honored his warmth and sincerity: “His smile, simplicity and honesty in every role will always be remembered.”

Potdar’s final rites are scheduled for August 19, 2025, in Thane.

A quiet presence with an unforgettable influence, Achyut Potdar’s journey from Army officer to beloved character actor is one that leaves a lasting impression on Indian cinema.
