Uttarakhand Becomes First Indian State to Implement Uniform Civil Code

Uttarakhand has made history by becoming the first Indian state to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), promoting legal equality among citizens regardless of caste or religion. The UCC standardizes personal laws related to marriage, divorce, succession, and inheritance, with specific provisions such as age and mental capacity requirements for marriage, while exempting Scheduled Tribes and protected communities.
The journey began in March 2022, with an expert panel led by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai drafting the UCC after extensive consultations. The bill received state approval in early 2024 and was signed into law by President Droupadi Murmu in March 2024, marking a significant step towards legal uniformity in India.
