On June 4, 2025, what began as a jubilant celebration for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) first Indian Premier League (IPL) title ended in tragedy. Thousands of fans gathered outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to partake in the festivities. However, the overwhelming crowd led to a stampede that resulted in 11 fatalities and over 50 injuries.

The chaos reportedly stemmed from a rumor about free passes being distributed at Gate No. 7, prompting a massive influx of people to that area. The sudden surge overwhelmed security measures, leading to panic and a deadly crowd crush. Efforts by police to control the situation, including baton charges, may have exacerbated the turmoil.

Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow over the incident, acknowledging that the crowd far exceeded expectations. In response to the tragedy, the planned victory parade was canceled, and an investigation into the mishap has been initiated.

This unfortunate event underscores the critical importance of effective crowd management during large-scale public gatherings. As the city mourns the loss of lives, authorities are urged to implement stringent safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
