On Wednesday, tensions between Thailand and Cambodia escalated when the Thai Air Force launched airstrikes using F-16 fighter jets on Cambodian military positions near the disputed border. The attack killed 9 Cambodian soldiers and injured several others, according to local sources.

The airstrikes were reportedly in response to what Thai officials called “provocative military movements” by Cambodian troops in the border region. Thailand claimed that Cambodian forces had crossed into Thai territory and set up temporary military posts, which led to a strong response from the Thai military.

The border area has been a source of conflict between the two countries for many years, especially near the Preah Vihear temple, which both nations claim as their own. While both governments have tried to solve the issue through talks in the past, occasional clashes continue to occur.

Cambodia has strongly condemned the Thai airstrikes, calling them an act of aggression and a violation of international law. The Cambodian Prime Minister has called for an emergency meeting with Thai officials and is also seeking help from the United Nations to de-escalate the situation.

Thailand, on the other hand, maintains that it acted in self-defense and only targeted military installations, not civilians. It also called for calm and said it remains open to dialogue.

International leaders and peace organizations have urged both sides to avoid further violence and resolve the issue through peaceful means. The United Nations has expressed concern and may step in to mediate the conflict if tensions continue to rise.

As of now, both countries have moved additional troops to the border, and the situation remains tense.
