Telangana Bans Poultry Imports from Andhra Pradesh Amid Bird Flu Outbreak

Share

In response to a confirmed bird flu outbreak in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district, the Telangana government has imposed a ban on poultry imports from the neighboring state. Authorities have set up 24 checkpoints along the border to prevent the entry of infected poultry and curb the spread of the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Department emphasized that these measures align with central government guidelines to safeguard the state’s poultry industry.

The outbreak was traced to Ramakrishna Poultry Farm in Kanuru Agraharam village, where over 1,500 chickens were culled, and a red zone was declared within a one-kilometer radius. The district administration also imposed restrictions on poultry sales within a 10-kilometer surveillance zone. Medical teams have been deployed to monitor the health of villagers and raise awareness about symptoms related to avian influenza.

Given Telangana’s reliance on poultry farming, officials have ramped up surveillance efforts and advised farmers to remain vigilant. Meetings with poultry industry representatives are underway to discuss containment strategies. Authorities have urged the public to cooperate with precautionary measures and report any unusual poultry deaths to prevent further spread of the virus.
