When the soul is as bright as the sun
How does the skin play a role?
Holding the power of shining bright
Colour lies within the soul

Fighting for humanity, the heart
Cries seeking the shore
Of the sea they are sailing made by us
With injustice at its core
Oh we divided the black and white,
White being a fragrance and black being a foul,
Keeping the thought of rationality aside
Not knowing that the colour lies within the soul
Ignoring how beautiful they are,
We consider them to be unworthy
Misjudging them for their natural beauty
Who are we to call them ugly or dirty?
It’s a beauty they have got
Which we cannot see at all
We make misconceptions, forgetting that
The colour lies within the soul
Breaking these illogical misconceptions
Overlooking these irrational judgments
If we look through their souls, we will realize
They are equally beautiful world’s fragments
Don’t let the darkness of their skin fool you because
The colour lies within the soul
Don’t let this foolishness of other humans affect you because
The colour lies within the soul.
Rationale of the poem by the poetess herself.
I chose racism because I really wanted to speak about it and poetry is the best way to describe any thoughts. Racism is not only about white or black but every skin colour that exists in this world. People tend to judge other people by the colour of their skin and often forget that darkness of their skin does not mean darkness of their soul. In fact, that darkness of their skin makes them uniquely beautiful and everyone should appreciate that. Through this poem I wanted to convey this message and therefore the title of the poem is “Colour Lies Within The Soul”. The poem basically gives an idea that everyone is beautiful in their own way and we should appreciate one’s beauty instead of dividing ourselves or humans into different categories. Also, we should not come under the influence of people who make misconceptions and look through the souls of people and consider everyone equal.
