Mercedes-Benz Develops Solar Paint for Electric Vehicles, Transforming Every Inch into an Energy Source
Mercedes-Benz is pioneering a groundbreaking technology that could revolutionize the way electric vehicles (EVs) are powered. The company is developing a solar paint designed to turn the entire exterior of an EV into an energy-harvesting surface, whether it’s parked or driving. This thin, flexible photovoltaic paint, which weighs only 50 grams per square meter and is just 5 micrometers thick, has the potential to significantly enhance the efficiency of electric vehicles.
The solar paint could allow a midsize SUV to harvest enough energy to travel up to 7,456 miles annually under ideal conditions. The amount of energy harvested would vary depending on the vehicle’s exposure to sunlight. Unlike traditional solar panels, this paint can bend around the car’s curves, offering more coverage and flexibility than rigid glass panels.
The paint is a multi-layer coating consisting of a solar-active material, insulation, and a top layer inspired by a butterfly’s wing, which is highly translucent and filled with nanoparticles to enable sunlight absorption while allowing for different car colors. The energy collected by the paint would be stored in the EV’s battery, potentially covering the entire daily driving distance in sunny regions like Los Angeles.
One of the major advantages of this solar paint is that it doesn’t use rare earth metals or toxic materials, making it more environmentally friendly and easier to recycle. This innovation could also reduce reliance on traditional EV charging networks, offering an alternative for charging that could alleviate concerns over limited infrastructure.
Although the technology is still in development, Mercedes-Benz is confident that solar paint will become a cost-effective, viable option for electric vehicles in the future. The goal is to make EVs more attractive, sustainable, and easier to adopt, helping to accelerate the transition to greener, cleaner transportation.
