Scientists have unveiled a detailed digital reconstruction of Saint Nicholas of Myra’s face, revealing a “strong and gentle” visage with features that resemble the modern depiction of Santa Claus. Using advanced 3D techniques based on the saint’s skull, lead researcher Cicero Moraes and his team crafted a lifelike image, complete with a broad face and thick beard reminiscent of the description in the 1823 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas.
Co-author Jos Luis Lira highlights Saint Nicholas’ historical significance as a fearless bishop and champion of the needy, whose life embodied compassion and generosity. This reconstruction sheds new light on the man behind the legend, reminding us of the enduring values of kindness and goodwill that resonate during the holiday season.
