In a grand ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on April 28, 2025, President Droupadi Murmu awarded the Padma Bhushan to PR Sreejesh and the Padma Shri to R Ashwin, recognizing their outstanding contributions to Indian sports.

PR Sreejesh, affectionately known as the “Great Wall of India,” is celebrated for his exceptional career as a hockey goalkeeper.He played a crucial role in securing Olympic bronze medals for India in both the Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024 Games.After retiring in 2024, Sreejesh transitioned to coaching, leading the India U-21 men’s hockey team.
R Ashwin, one of India’s most successful off-spin bowlers, concluded his international cricket career in 2024.He was instrumental in numerous victories for Team India and continues to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Chennai Super Kings.
The ceremony also honored other sports personalities, including former footballer IM Vijayan and Paralympian Harvinder Singh, who received the Padma Shri for their achievements in football and archery, respectively.
These awards highlight the dedication and excellence of Indian athletes who have brought pride to the nation through their sportsmanship and achievements.
