On June 5, 2025, World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Aravalli Green Wall Project to restore and reforest a 700-kilometer stretch of the Aravalli mountain range. The project will span across four states—Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi—and aims to improve biodiversity, prevent desertification, and strengthen the region’s ecological balance.

The launch event took place in Gujarat’s Kutch district, where the Prime Minister emphasized the urgent need to protect India’s environment and natural resources. The Aravalli range, one of the oldest mountain chains in the world, has been under threat due to deforestation, mining, and encroachments.
Under the project, large-scale plantation drives will be carried out using native species. The initiative will also involve the creation of water conservation structures and efforts to increase green cover through people’s participation. Local communities, NGOs, and forest departments will be key partners in this effort.
PM Modi described the initiative as part of India’s larger climate and sustainability goals, aligning with the country’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. He also highlighted that projects like this will help combat climate change and preserve nature for future generations.
The “Green Wall” is expected to act as a natural barrier against desert expansion, boost forest-based livelihoods, and revive wildlife habitats—making it one of the largest ecological restoration efforts in India.
