Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Buenos Aires on July 5–6, 2025, marking the culmination of his historic South American and African tour. He received the Key to the City of Buenos Aires—a ceremonial honour symbolizing trust and friendship—from Jorge Macri. This recognition highlights Modi’s contributions to deepening bilateral ties.

The visit stands out as the first standalone bilateral trip by an Indian PM to Argentina in 57 years, tracing back to Indira Gandhi’s 1968 visit.
Modi also paid heartfelt tributes to cultural and freedom icons:
- Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, whose values and historic bonds resonate in Argentina
- General José de San Martín, Argentina’s founding hero, at the San Martín memorial
Throughout his engagement with President Javier Milei, Modi and Milei finalized agreements to enhance cooperation in mining (notably lithium and shale gas), defence, energy, pharmaceuticals, digital payments (UPI), agriculture, and trade, reinforcing a strategic partnership with mutual benefits.
The Prime Minister was warmly welcomed by the Indian diaspora, with hundreds chanting “Modi-Modi” and participating in cultural performances outside the Alvear Palace Hotel—underscoring the strong emotional bond between India and its global community.
This honour further solidified Modi’s international recognition. Preceding the Buenos Aires accolade, he received Trinidad and Tobago’s Order of the Republic, and other honours on his five-nation tour. As he proceeds to Brazil for the BRICS Summit and concludes his journey in Namibia, this achievement highlights India’s rising prominence and its expanding global engagement.
