On June 29, in his monthly radio show Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) ambitious environmental initiative: Mission Four Million Trees, unveiled on World Environment Day. Set to plant 40 lakh trees across Ahmedabad, the project emphasizes biodiversity, urban cooling, carbon capture, and active community engagement.

A key highlight is the Sindoor Van, an oxygen park under development in the Jagatpur–Chandlodia ward. This sacred grove, a living tribute to the martyrs of Operation Sindoor, features over 12,000 trees, including 551 sacrificial Sindoor trees. Modi described it as a “beautiful initiative for the environment” and underscored its dual role as both ecological project and national memorial.

The mission incorporates advanced tree-planting methods like Miyawaki forests—dense, native micro-forests known for rapid growth and rich biodiversity. It also promotes citizen participation through tree drives involving schools and local groups, awareness via “Tree Chariots,” and public tracking through the AMC Seva App.

Modi emphasized the importance of ecological stewardship for future generations: “When we save nature, we actually protect our future generations”. The initiative aligns seamlessly with urban sustainability goals, aiming to enhance air quality, add green cover, and foster community-led environmentalism.

With a target of planting four million trees, AMC’s campaign offers a replicable model for urban India—fusing ecological restoration with cultural memory. Through partnerships between government, citizens, and technology, Mission Four Million Trees and the Sindoor Van signal Ahmedabad’s rising leadership in green urban transformation.

As India intensifies its focus on climate resilience and urban wellbeing, Ahmedabad’s landmark afforestation drive underlines how cities can become hubs of sustainable innovation, national pride, and collective purpose.
