The bill to facilitate simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections is a top priority for the Narendra Modi government. On Thursday, the Union Cabinet approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill, which is expected to be tabled during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, according to sources. The bill will be referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further deliberation.
In September, the Union Cabinet endorsed the proposal outlined in a report by a high-powered committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the initiative, stating, “The Cabinet has accepted the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections.” He further praised former President Ram Nath Kovind for his leadership and extensive consultation with diverse stakeholders, calling it “an important step towards making our democracy even more vibrant and participative.” PM Modi shared his remarks on X (formerly Twitter).
The high-powered panel recommended implementing concurrent elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as the initial phase, followed by synchronised local body polls within 100 days.
