The Navi Mumbai airport is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 8, with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) having already granted its aerodrome license. The airport is being built via a joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (74%) and CIDCO (26%), in a multi-phase design. In its launch phase, NMIA will cater to 20 million passengers annually and handle 0.5 million metric tons of cargo; later phases will expand capacities to 90 million passengers and 3.2 million tons of cargo.
Meanwhile, Noida International Airport, located in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is set for its inauguration on October 30. The airport is expected to begin flight operations within 45 days of its inauguration. Its first phase will include one runway and terminal, with capacity for about 12 million passengers per year; in subsequent phases, the capacity could scale up to 70 million. Airlines are already tying up with both airports: IndiGo has signed on as a launch carrier for NIA, while NMIA has seen commitments from Air India, IndiGo, and Akasa Air.
These two airports aim to relieve pressure on existing major hubs — Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) — while improving connectivity and capacity.
