In a moment of unprecedented symbolism, the Indian national flag—the Tiranga—was hoisted for the first time ever atop Seattle’s iconic Space Needle on August 15, 2025, marking India’s 79th Independence Day. This historic gesture resonated widely, highlighting the enduring ties between India and the Pacific Northwest.
Standing at 605 feet and a defining feature of the city’s skyline since its 1962 inauguration, the Space Needle has become a powerful symbol of Seattle’s innovation and tech-driven identity.
The flag-raising, orchestrated by the Consulate General of India in Seattle, was attended by prominent figures including Consul General Prakash Gupta and Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell. The event celebrated the Indian-American diaspora’s role in shaping the region’s tech landscape.
A community gathering at Kerry Park provided a picturesque vantage point of the tricolour soaring above. The reception welcomed Indian-American residents and featured dignitaries such as U.S. Congressman Adam Smith, Chief Justice Debra Stephens, Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho, and Parks & Recreation Director AP Diaz. Congressman Smith described the hoisting as a tribute to diversity and the strong bonds between India and the region.
The celebrations also included a vibrant cultural program with national anthems, Indian dance performances, and poetic recitals, reflecting the rich heritage of India.
In further recognition of the occasion, King County, alongside cities such as Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, and Bellevue, issued proclamations designating August 15 as “India Day.”
This landmark event not only underscores the visibility of the Indian diaspora in the U.S. but also cements a symbolic bridge between the two nations through cultural celebration and mutual respect.
