India’s pride in javelin, Neeraj Chopra, stole the show at the first-ever Neeraj Chopra Classic (NC Classic) in Bengaluru. The A‑category World Athletics event drew 12 elite throwers, including Olympic and world champions, but it was Chopra who soared above them all with an impeccable 86.18m throw during his third attempt.

Despite challenging strong winds, Chopra dominated, with follow‑up throws of 84.07m and 82.22m, keeping every competitor at bay. Kenya’s Julius Yego claimed silver with a commendable 84.51m, while Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage took bronze at 84.34m.

The event format trimmed the field from 12 to 8 after the initial three rounds, but Chopra’s consistency and flair kept him afloat throughout. He later reflected on the performance:

“It was mentally tough … everyone had their eyeballs on me. My entire family is here, so I was nervous about that too”.

For the spectators—14,500-plus—they witnessed India’s athletics star shine on home soil. Chopra emphasized the importance of such events, encouraging fans and athletes alike to bring more attention to track and field. Supported by JSW Sports and certified as world-class by the Athletics Federation of India and World Athletics, NC Classic marks a significant milestone.

This victory comes hot on the heels of Chopra’s success at the Paris Diamond League and the Golden Spike Ostrava, marking his third consecutive recent titl. As India’s first homegrown international javelin meet, the NC Classic sets the stage for future editions and broader athletic development in the country.

With Chopra at the forefront, the NC Classic is set to become an annual highlight, inspiring a new generation of Indian athletes.
