With a commanding first‑round throw of 86.18 m, Chopra seized gold amidst a world‑class field that included Kenya’s former world champion Julius Yego and Sri Lankan standout Rumesh Pathirage, who claimed silver (84.51 m) and bronze (84.34 m), respectively.

Held at Bengaluru’s Sree Kanteerava Stadium, this event marked India’s debut in hosting a World Athletics gold‑tier field competition. The turnout was phenomenal—over 14,500 cheering fans attended to witness a milestone moment in Indian athletics. Chopra, who already owns Olympic (Tokyo 2021) and Paris 2024 silver medals, overcame an initial foul to assert his dominance, following his winning throw with consistent efforts of 84.07 m and 82.22 m.

The competition featured twelve participants, narrowed to eight after the initial three attempts. A surprise exit was Germany’s Thomas Röhler, the 2016 Olympic champion, who failed to progress. The Indian contingent performed strongly, with three athletes advancing to the final stages, including Asian Championships silver medalist Sachin Yadav, who threw 82.33 m despite an ankle injury.

Chopra shared his gratitude towards the Athletics Federation of India and World Athletics for making this event possible, and expressed a vision to expand the competition in future editions. He also emphasised the importance of public support for track and field, urging fans to attend and inspire athletes—a testament to his role not just as a champion, but as a torchbearer for the sport in India.

This landmark event, headlined by Neeraj’s performance and unprecedented enthusiasm from spectators, has set a promising foundation for world-class athletics in India and elevated the country’s global presence in field events.
