The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has responded to recent controversy over its new Class 8 Social Science textbook. The new book describes the Mughal Empire as “brutal”, “intolerant”, and “ruthless”, which has led to public debates and media coverage.

Many people questioned why the book used such strong words for the Mughals. Some critics said it was an attempt to show a one-sided or negative view of Muslim rulers. Others feared that such descriptions could influence students in the wrong way.

In response, NCERT clarified that the textbook content is based on “credible historical sources.” Officials said that they have used well-known historians’ research and records from that time to describe the events truthfully. According to NCERT, the purpose of education is not to glorify or insult any ruler, but to help students understand history as it happened.

The book also highlights other rulers like the Marathas, Cholas, and Rajputs. It explains their role in resisting invasions and building Indian society. However, the strong language used for the Mughals and Delhi Sultans has become the main talking point.

NCERT said the book was reviewed by experts before publishing and that it tries to present a balanced view. “We do not want to hide facts. If the rulers were harsh or followed intolerant policies, students have the right to know,” said a senior official.

The new book is part of NCERT’s updated curriculum and is now being used in Class 8 schools across India.
