Justice BR Gavai Becomes 52nd Chief Justice of India, Marking Historic Firsts

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025, by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. His appointment is historic, as he is the first Buddhist and only the second person from the Scheduled Castes to hold this esteemed position, following Justice KG Balakrishnan’s tenure ending in 2010. Justice Gavai’s elevation reflects India’s strides toward greater inclusivity and representation in its judiciary.
Born in Maharashtra, Justice Gavai chose a legal career over his family’s political background. He began his judicial journey in the Bombay High Court and was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. Throughout his career, he has been involved in significant rulings, particularly in environmental and arbitration law.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Justice Gavai’s gesture of touching his mother’s feet resonated deeply, symbolizing humility and respect. His tenure as Chief Justice is expected to last until November 23, 2025.
Justice Gavai has expressed a strong commitment to upholding social and political justice, aligning with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s ideals of equality and dignity for marginalized communities.
