India’s First White Tiger Breeding Centre Approved in Rewa, MP

In a landmark decision for wildlife conservation, the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has granted final approval for India’s first-ever white tiger breeding centre in Govindgarh, located in the Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh. This ambitious initiative, which was initially approved in principle in 2011, is set to be developed near the Mukundpur White Tiger Safari, the state’s only white tiger tourism facility.
The breeding centre is expected to play a crucial role in preserving the rare and majestic white tiger population, enhancing biodiversity conservation efforts, and promoting wildlife tourism in the region. Historical Significance
Rewa holds a unique place in the history of white tigers, as it is famously associated with Mohan, the last known wild white tiger, discovered in 1951 in the Govindgarh jungles by Maharaja Martand Singh Judeo. Recognizing the significance of this rare genetic marvel, the Maharaja initiated a white tiger breeding and conservation program, which later led to the presence of white tigers in zoos worldwide. This new breeding centre aims to revive and further strengthen Rewa’s legacy as the home of the white tiger.

The white tiger breeding centre will be an integral part of a revised master plan for the Maharaja Martand Singh Judeo White Tiger Safari and Zoo in Mukundpur.
