India Launches Its First Deepwater Transshipment Port at Vizhinjam

On May 2, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, marking a significant milestone in India’s maritime infrastructure. Key Features of Vizhinjam Port:

  • Strategic Location: Situated approximately 10 nautical miles from the busy east–west shipping corridor connecting Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, Vizhinjam Port is ideally positioned to serve as a major transshipment hub.

  • Deep Natural Draft: The port boasts a natural depth of 24 meters, allowing it to accommodate some of the world’s largest cargo vessels without extensive dredging.

  • Modern Infrastructure: Equipped with advanced facilities, including automated systems and state-of-the-art cranes, the port is designed to handle large volumes of cargo efficiently.

  • Public-Private Partnership: Developed under a public-private partnership model, the project involves the Adani Group and the Kerala government, with the latter holding a majority stake.

Economic and Strategic Significance:

Before Vizhinjam Port’s inauguration, India relied heavily on foreign ports like Colombo and Singapore for transshipment, leading to increased costs and longer transit times. The new port is expected to:

  • Reduce Shipping Costs: By handling transshipment domestically, India can save approximately $80 to $100 per container, potentially reducing annual losses of $200–220 million.

  • Boost Trade Efficiency: The port’s capabilities will streamline cargo handling, making Indian exports more competitive globally.

  • Create Employment Opportunities: The port is anticipated to generate thousands of jobs, contributing to the local and national economy.

The inauguration of Vizhinjam Port represents a significant step towards enhancing India’s maritime infrastructure and reducing dependency on foreign transshipment hubs.
