Indian Passport Rules Updated: Key Changes in 2025

In 2025, the Indian government updated passport regulations to streamline the application process and enhance privacy. For individuals born on or after October 1, 2023, a birth certificate issued by authorized bodies is now mandatory as the sole proof of date of birth. Those born before this date can continue to use alternative documents like school leaving certificates or PAN cards.
To protect personal information, the residential address and parents’ names will no longer be printed on the last page of the passport. Instead, this information will be embedded digitally in a barcode, accessible to immigration officials when needed.
A new color-coding system has been introduced: white passports for government officials, red for diplomats, and blue for ordinary citizens. Additionally, the number of Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) will increase from 442 to 600 over the next five years to improve accessibility.
These changes aim to simplify the passport application process and ensure the privacy and security of applicants’ personal information.
