Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s green drive—Mission for Million Trees 2025—has made remarkable progress. By July 30, the city had planted over 20.42 lakh trees, crossing the halfway mark of its 40 lakh tree target for the year.

The campaign, launched on World Environment Day (June 5, 2025) by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, includes a symbolic tree plantation in the Chandlodia ward, representing the development of Sindoor Van, a commemorative nature park with 551 Sindoor trees dedicated to civilians lost in the Pahalgam attack and the armed forces’ Operation Sindoor. Accompanying the launch were tree chariots—special vehicles to deliver saplings and plant them at citizens’ doorsteps—as part of the citywide awareness push, including integration with the AMC Seva app and a toll-free helpline for residents to request tree planting support.
By early July, about 5.81 lakh saplings had been planted, with a plan to complete the remaining 34.19 lakh during the monsoon season. The project was approved on May 30 with a ₹69 crore budget, covering planting over 5.25 lakh square meters, and includes a two-year maintenance schedule. A tender revision that separated tree procurement from labor and maintenance helped the AMC save around ₹5 crore in GST, expanding the planting area to over 6 lakh square meters.
Additional greening initiatives complement the mission. The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority is set to plant 1.2 lakh trees over 99,000 sq m using CSR funds and the fast-growing Miyawaki technique across 11 garden plots. Meanwhile, the state-wide “Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam” campaign and other efforts have resulted in from 17 to 40 crore saplings overall in Gujarat, with Ahmedabad prominently contributing to these totals.
Looking ahead, the city aims to maintain momentum through citizen participation, public-private partnerships, and municipal support—complemented by new urban planning guidelines mandating 5% green cover in all new town planning schemes, including urban forests using Miyawaki methods.
Ahmedabad’s greening journey not only reflects environmental foresight, but also inclusive governance—engaging both authorities and citizens in creating a cooler, cleaner, and more vibrant city.
