Gulzar and Rambhadracharya Receive India’s Highest Literary Honor

On May 17, 2025, President Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious 58th Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary honour, to two great contributors to Indian literature — Gulzar and Jagadguru Rambhadracharyaat a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. Gulzar, a well-known poet, lyricist, and filmmaker, is celebrated for his emotional and thought-provoking poetry and lyrics in Hindi cinema. Though he couldn’t attend due to health reasons, his work continues to inspire generations. Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, a Sanskrit scholar and spiritual leader who lost his eyesight in childhood, has written four Sanskrit epics and played a vital role in promoting Sanskrit literature and education. He is also the founder of a university for students with disabilities in Chitrakoot. The Jnanpith Award, given since 1961, recognizes outstanding literary contributions in Indian languages. This year’s awards highlight the richness of Indian literature across both modern and classical traditions.
