The Gujarat government has made a significant policy change to benefit fixed-salary staff in grant-in-aid educational institutions. This new rule grants 20 sick leave days and 15 special leave days annually to these employees, providing benefits similar to those of regular government staff.

The policy covers staff at 357 government-aided colleges, benefiting 1,282 employees, including 1,167 teaching and 115 non-teaching staff members. For sick leave, employees may take 10 days of fully paid leave or 20 days of half-paid leave per year, based on a valid medical certificate, whether the illness or injury affects themselves or an immediate family member.
The policy also allows sick leave accrued during the fixed-pay period to be carried forward if the employee transitions to a regular position. In addition, non-teaching, non-vacation fixed-pay staff are eligible for 15 special leave days each year. However, unlike sick leave, these special leaves cannot be carried forward once the staff is regularised.
This change marks a notable improvement in working conditions for nearly 1,300 staff across the state, addressing a long-standing gap in leave benefits for fixed-salary employees in educational institutions
