In a significant step towards legal uniformity and equality, the Gujarat government has appointed a five-member panel, chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, to draft the state’s Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The committee, which includes legal experts, academicians, and social workers, is expected to submit its report within 45 days. This move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a uniform legal framework across India, ensuring equal rights for all citizens regardless of religion or community.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel emphasized the Constitution as the “sacred text” guiding this decision, reinforcing the principle of “Indianness” and equal opportunities for all. The initiative follows Uttarakhand’s recent introduction of UCC regulations, particularly on live-in relationships, and is seen as part of a broader nationwide push toward uniform personal laws covering marriage, inheritance, divorce, and adoption. Once the report is submitted, the Gujarat government will review the recommendations and take further steps toward UCC implementation.
