Did you know that a hippopotamus has lips that are almost two feet wide? That’s about as long as a baby bicycle or a small school bag!
Hippos are huge animals that live near rivers and lakes in Africa. They love to spend their time in the water, keeping cool under the hot sun. Even though they look slow and sleepy, hippos are super strong and can run really fast when they want to!
Their giant lips help them grab and pull plants from the water to munch on. Hippos eat mostly grass, but their big mouths are perfect for scooping up lots of food at once.
And guess what? A hippo’s mouth can open really, really wide—almost 150 degrees—which is wider than you can stretch your arms!
So the next time you see a picture of a hippo smiling, take a closer look at those huge lips—they’re almost as wide as a door!
