Devastating Earthquake of 7.1 Magnitude Strikes Tibet, Killing 95+

On January 7, 2025, a series of powerful earthquakes struck Tibet, resulting in significant loss of life and widespread destruction. The strongest quake measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, and six earthquakes were recorded within an hour. The epicenter was near Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city and home to 800,000 people. At least 95 people have been reported dead, with more than 130 injured. Thousands of buildings were damaged, and approximately 1,000 houses collapsed in Dingri County, near the epicenter. Shigatse is also the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, an important figure in Tibetan Buddhism.
The tremors were felt across neighboring countries, including India, Nepal, and Bhutan. In India, strong shaking was reported in Delhi-NCR, Bihar, West Bengal, and northeastern states such as Assam. Residents evacuated buildings in panic as the tremors created widespread alarm. In Nepal, the capital city of Kathmandu experienced strong shaking, prompting people to rush outdoors. The country’s disaster management authority reported tremors in seven hill districts bordering Tibet. Bhutan also experienced mild tremors, though no major damages or casualties were reported.
In response to the disaster, China launched large-scale rescue operations. Over 1,500 rescue personnel were dispatched to the affected areas, equipped with medical supplies and search-and-rescue tools. The government allocated 100 million yuan for relief efforts, including the provision of emergency necessities such as tents, clothing, and bedding. Medical teams are working tirelessly to treat the injured and provide aid to those affected.
The Himalayan region’s high seismic activity, caused by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, makes it prone to devastating earthquakes. This disaster highlights the ongoing risks in the region, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and rapid response to mitigate the impact of such natural calamities.
