Australian Universities Restrict Admissions from Six Indian States Amid Visa Concerns

In April 2025, multiple Australian universities, including Federation University, Western Sydney University, Victoria University, and Southern Cross University, have restricted admissions from six Indian states: Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, and Jammu & Kashmir. This action follows reports of students violating visa terms by engaging in full-time employment instead of pursuing their studies, leading to increased visa fraud concerns.
While the Australian government has not officially endorsed region-specific bans, it permits universities to set their own admission policies. The Association of Australian Education Representatives in India has criticized these measures as discriminatory.
Prospective students from the affected states are advised to consult with official university channels or authorized education consultants to understand the current admission criteria and explore alternative study destinations if necessary.
