No-Detention Rule Scrapped for Gujarat Schools

The Gujarat government, led by Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, announced the scrapping of the no-detention policy under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. Effective from the 2019-20 academic session, students in Classes 5 and 8 who fail their exams can now be detained. The decision follows the state’s repeated appeals to the Centre to amend the policy, which was revised earlier in January.

If a Class 5 or 8 student fails the annual exam, they will be given a second chance through a re-test. Those failing the re-test will be detained, as per Gujarat’s revised policy.
