In a nod to India’s advancements in space exploration, researchers have christened a newly discovered species of deep-sea isopod found off the Kollam coast after the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The diminutive fish-parasitic crustacean, identified within the Brucethoa genus, was recovered from the gill cavity base of the Spinyjawgreeneye, a marine fish. This unique name pays homage to ISRO’s pioneering efforts in the realm of space science and technology, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of scientific discovery. The finding underscores the importance of marine biodiversity research and the ongoing exploration of India’s coastal ecosystems, shedding light on previously undiscovered species thriving in the depths of the ocean.
