The Gujarat government has allocated ₹32.40 crore to strengthen and restore the historic Swami Vivekanand Bridge, also known as Ellis Bridge, in Ahmedabad. Originally built in 1892 over the Sabarmati River during British rule, this iconic bridge has become an important landmark in the city. However, due to its age and deteriorating condition, it now requires urgent repairs to ensure its safety and longevity. The restoration project is part of the state’s Shaheri Vikas Yojana, which focuses on urban development and infrastructure renewal.

Ellis Bridge has been closed to traffic for some time due to safety concerns, highlighting the necessity of this restoration. Once a vital connection across the Sabarmati River, the bridge has played a key role in the city’s transportation network. The planned repairs and strengthening will preserve the bridge’s historical significance while ensuring it remains functional for future generations. The project is expected to breathe new life into the aging structure, making it safer for public use and maintaining its place as an important piece of Ahmedabad’s heritage.
