The first astronomical observatory in Eastern India has been inaugurated atop Panchet Hill in Purulia district, West Bengal, marking a major milestone in India’s astronomical research. The observatory, the sixth in the country, joins others in Ladakh, Nainital, Mount Abu, Girbani Hills, and Kavalur.

Named after physicist Satyendra Nath Bose, the observatory honors his contributions to quantum mechanics. It has been set up by the Satyendra Nath Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS), in collaboration with Sidhu Kanu Birsa University, Purulia, for managing and conducting research in astronomy, astrophysics, and atmospheric sciences.

Located at 600 meters above sea level and positioned along the rare 86° East longitude, the observatory features a 14-inch telescope, with plans for a 1-meter telescope. Its pristine, pollution-free location makes it ideal for accurate astronomical observations.

Alongside the observatory, an automatic weather forecast center has been established to aid weather forecasting and atmospheric research. This new facility will play a key role in advancing India’s space science research and strengthen international collaboration in astrophysics.
