In Hyderabad, a recent fitness check conducted by traffic police and the transport department uncovered safety violations in 21 private school buses across areas such as Panjagutta, Gopalapuram, and Ameerpet. The inspection, aimed at ensuring compliance with the Supreme Court’s guidelines for school transport safety, revealed multiple infractions, leading to the issuance of notices to the bus operators involved. The violations ranged from failing to adhere to safety regulations to operating without the necessary permits. According to Hyderabad Traffic DCP Rahul Hegde, this crackdown is part of a broader effort to ensure that school buses comply with strict safety standards to protect children while commuting.
The Supreme Court guidelines for school buses are comprehensive, emphasizing the need for safe and secure transportation for school children. Buses must carry valid permits and display signs clearly indicating they are “On School Duty.” There are strict rules against overcrowding—children should not be forced to sit on each other’s laps—and every bus must have essential safety equipment like a first-aid kit and drinking water. Additionally, the school’s name and contact information must be visibly displayed on the bus. Drivers are required to be experienced, possess a clean driving record, and adhere to all safety protocols. However, despite repeated warnings, some schools continue to flout these regulations, leading to not only safety risks but also traffic congestion in the city.
As a result of the violations, the offending buses were fined under the Motor Vehicles Act and subsequently seized. These buses will not be released until the operators take corrective measures and comply with all safety requirements. This initiative highlights the authorities’ firm stance on enforcing school bus safety regulations, ensuring the well-being of students, and minimizing traffic disruptions caused by non-compliant school buses. It serves as a reminder to school authorities and transport operators to prioritize safety and abide by the rules, or face legal consequences.
