Ahmedabad has launched a groundbreaking initiative in eco-friendly public transport. On July 19, 2025, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the country’s first on‑route solar-powered charging station at RTO Circle in the city.

This new charging hub features two high-capacity chargers (240 kW and 180 kW) supported by a 120 kW solar power system. It can recharge 40–45 AMTS electric buses daily, eliminating the need to ferry buses back to depots for charging.
The 120 kW solar setup is expected to generate approximately 120,000 kWh of electricity annually. This clean energy supply not only cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions but also reduces operational costs. AMC anticipates savings of around ₹1 crore per year by eliminating the extra expense of transporting buses to depots.
This project is part of Phase 2 under the CAPACITIES initiative funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. With this successful installation, AMC plans to build two more similar on‑route solar charging stations across the city.
Beyond its environmental benefits, this facility serves as a practical solution to urban charging challenges. On‑route charging cuts down on idle kilometers and lowers CCTV-trained downtime, making bus services more efficient and eco-friendly.
Overall, this initiative firmly positions Ahmedabad at the forefront of sustainable city transport in India by combining modern electric vehicle infrastructure with clean solar power.
