Shubman Gill Named ODI Captain as India Announce Squads for Australia Tour

In a significant leadership change, Shubman Gill has been named the new captain of India’s ODI team for the upcoming series against Australia, scheduled from October 19 to 25. This move marks a generational shift, with Gill, 26, now leading in both Tests and ODIs. Rohit Sharma, who has captained India in ODIs for several years, has been replaced as part of a strategic transition. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar emphasized that maintaining three different captains across formats was “practically impossible,” hence the decision to consolidate leadership under Gill.
Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the vice-captain for the series, joining Gill in the leadership roles. Veteran players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been included in the 15-member ODI squad, ensuring a blend of experience alongside the new leadership. However, Jasprit Bumrah will be rested for the ODIs as part of workload management. Yashasvi Jaiswal returns to the ODI squad following consistent performances in T20 internationals.
