Gujarat Govt Approves 8 New English-Medium Secondary Schools; STEM MoU With IITGN

Share

Gandhinagar — On July 31, 2025, the Gujarat government sanctioned the creation of eight new English-medium secondary schools within municipal corporation areas for the academic year 2025-26, Education Minister Kuber Dindor announced in the state assembly. The approval was in response to a query raised by BJP MLA Aniket Thaker from Palanpur. The move is seen as part of the government’s efforts to widen access to English medium education, especially in urban corporation locales.

In another development tabled before the legislature, the Science City, Ahmedabad revealed that it has entered into several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) since 2022 with institutes to strengthen STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education among students and youth. One key agreement is with the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGN), formalized on February 23, 2022, for a period of five years. Under this pact, Science City will provide space and resources for setting up experimentation centres and tinkering labs; it will also conduct workshops for both teachers and students. IITGN, in turn, will organise exhibitions, teacher training sessions, hands-on STEM workshops, and assist in laboratory setup. The collaboration is aimed at fostering creativity, innovation, and scientific temper in the younger generation. (Detailed figures of other MoUs were not fully disclosed.)

These changes are part of a broader push by Gujarat to improve both quality and capacity in education. Alongside approving new schools, the government has also been promoting English-medium sections in existing government schools, responding to growing demand among parents. The dual strategy seeks to address both access and modern educational needs.
