GANDHINAGAR — On the occasion of Hindi Diwas, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the 5th Akhil Bharatiya Rajbhasha Sammelan at the Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre in Gandhinagar on 14 September 2025.

Shah stressed that Hindi should expand beyond its traditional domains — speech and administration — and become a language of science, technology, judiciary, and law enforcement as well. He made a point to say there is no conflict between Hindi and regional languages, citing Gujarat as an example where both Hindi and Gujarati flourish side by side.
The Home Minister underlined the importance of education in the mother tongue. He noted that using one’s native language enhances learning clarity, observing that children forced to study in non-native languages lose a significant portion of cognitive effort to translation.
Shah also spoke about some key initiatives under way:
The “Bahubhashi Anuvad Sarthi” programme for aiding multilingual communication and translation.
Expansion of the “Hindi Shabd Sindhu” dictionary, which started with about 51,000 words and now boasts over 700,000 words, with a goal to become the largest dictionary in the world by 2029.
He reiterated that Hindi should be viewed not as a rival but as a companion to regional languages, fostering unity and mutual growth.
With this Sammelan, the Centre hopes to deepen the presence of Hindi in technical, academic, and legal spheres while maintaining respect and space for India’s rich tapestry of regional and mother tongues.
