Following public outcry and legal rulings requiring her rehabilitation, the elephant Madhuri (Mahadevi) was relocated from a Jain shrine in Kolhapur to Vantara, an animal welfare centre in Jamnagar run by Anant Ambani.

In response to widespread emotional and cultural concern, Vantara has now offered its full support to a review petition being filed with the Supreme Court by the Maharashtra government and the Jain Math seeking Madhuri’s return.

Moreover, Vantara has proposed establishing a satellite rehabilitation facility for Madhuri near her original home at Nandani, Kolhapur. The proposed centre, to be developed in consultation with the Jain Math and the Maharashtra Forest Department, would include advanced medical infrastructure, open natural enclosures, hydrotherapy pools, laser therapy rooms, and 24×7 veterinary care, designed with the elephant’s well-being in mind.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has welcomed Vantara’s proposal, describing it as a positive step that respects both judicial directives and public sentiment.

In an official statement, Vantara expressed regret if its involvement—carried out strictly in accordance with court orders—caused distress among the Jain community or Kolhapur residents. The organisation reaffirmed that their intent was not to overstep cultural sensitivities and offered a heartfelt apology: “If our involvement … has caused any distress …, we express our sincere regret” .

Pending court approval, Vantara stands ready to provide technical and veterinary assistance for the elephant’s safe and dignified return, alongside the development of the proposed rehabilitation centre.
