A major landslide hit the traditional Banganga route to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district on the morning of July 21, 2025, triggering panic among pilgrims. The incident occurred around 8:50 am near Gulshan Ka Langar, a popular stop for yatris along the old trekking path from Katra.

According to reports, large boulders and mud debris crashed down onto the path due to continuous heavy rainfall. Several pilgrims sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital in Katra. Rescue teams including local police, Shrine Board authorities, and disaster response units quickly reached the spot to search for those possibly trapped under the rubble.
The new Himkoti route, which usually carries much of the pilgrim traffic, had already been disrupted last month by a separate landslide. As a result, many pilgrims were redirected to the old Banganga track—now affected by this fresh disaster.
Officials are monitoring the situation and have urged pilgrims to stay cautious and follow instructions from authorities. “Rescue work is ongoing. We are doing everything possible to ensure everyone’s safety,” said a senior official from the Shrine Board.
The incident once again highlights the challenges posed by monsoon-related landslides in the hilly regions of Jammu and Kashmir. Pilgrims planning to visit the holy shrine are advised to check weather updates and route advisories before beginning their journey.
Rescue operations are still underway at the site. The number of people trapped is yet to be confirmed.
