In the million-plus population category, Lucknow secured an impressive third place, trailing only Ahmedabad and Bhopal. The city also earned a 7-Star Garbage Free City certification—one of the highest ratings awarded for effective solid waste management. However, cleanliness officials in Lucknow still aim to improve streetlight functioning, open dumping prevention, and door-to-door waste collection systems.

Several other UP cities also received accolades. Prayagraj was recognized as the Cleanest Ganga City for excellence during the Mahakumbh 2025. Gorakhpur earned a 5-Star Garbage Free City rating and was named a SafaiMitra Surakshit Shehar, acknowledging its safe working conditions for sanitation workers. Agra was honored as the Emerging Clean City of Uttar Pradesh and featured among India’s top 30 cleanest cities. In the 3‑10 lakh population segment, Moradabad ranked 10th and Bijnor secured 29th place in the Ganga towns category.

This year’s awards, the 9th edition of the survey, evaluated over 4,500 urban local bodies, including special categories like Super Swachh League cities, Ganga towns, cantonment boards, and sanitation worker safety initiatives.

These honors highlight UP’s robust efforts in urban hygiene, waste management, citizen participation, and focused initiatives during mass events like the Mahakumbh. For travelers and residents alike, this means cleaner public spaces and healthier environments in key cultural and historical hubs.
