The accident happened near Brisbane, where the mother koala and her joey were hit by a car. Luckily, both survived. Wildlife rescuers quickly came to help and took them to Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.
The baby koala had minor injuries, including a sore leg and some scratches, while the mother had a few bumps but was mostly okay. Vets at the hospital treated them with care and gave them a quiet place to rest.
While the joey was recovering, cameras captured a beautiful moment—his mum gently wrapping her arms around him. The hug seemed to calm the little koala and made everyone at the hospital smile. Vets say this kind of contact helps the joey feel safe and heal faster.
Dr. Sharon Griffiths, the hospital vet, said, “The joey was shaken but doing better. Seeing the mum hug her baby was very special.” She added that koalas are strong animals and the bond between mother and baby is very important for their recovery.
After a few weeks of treatment and rest, both mother and baby will be released back into the wild, in a safe area away from roads.
This story reminds us to drive carefully in areas where animals live. Many native animals like koalas are at risk of injury from cars.
The mother koala’s hug shows that love and care can bring comfort—even to wild animals. It’s a touching reminder of the deep bond between a mother and her baby.
