Elon Musk Launches New “America Party” Amid Feud with Donald Trump

Share

Elon Musk announced the formation of the America Party on July 5, 2025, via his X platform, declaring: “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.” This move marks a stark break from his previous support for Donald Trump, triggered by Musk’s opposition to the recently passed “Big, Beautiful Bill,” which he warned could “bankrupt the country” with soaring deficits.

In a poll held on July 4, approximately 65% of more than 1.2 million respondents backed the creation of a new political party. Musk envisions a strategic approach: targeting “2–3 Senate seats and 8–10 House districts” to influence the balance of power in the razor-thin U.S. Congress.

Trump responded sharply, calling Musk “off the rails” and branding the idea “ridiculous,” warning that third parties always lead to confusion. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed skepticism, suggesting Musk’s political detour could distract investors and company boards, and downplay his influence within his enterprises.

Despite criticism, the America Party centers on fiscal conservatism, promoting deficit reduction, AI modernization of the military, regulatory cuts, and policies to encourage higher birth rates. While Musk has officially filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission, experts warn that navigating U.S. ballot access and political regulations across 50 states poses major hurdles—a process often costly and time-consuming.

Musk plans to initially influence House and Senate races, though he hasn’t ruled out a presidential run in the future. Analysts and investors are watching closely: while Musk’s wealth offers resources for such a venture, the entrenched two-party system in America remains a formidable barrier.
