On May 7, 2025, Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma shared a big announcement—he is retiring from Test cricket at the age of 38. He shared the news on Instagram, thanking fans and his team for supporting him during his Test journey.

Rohit made his Test debut in 2013 and scored a century (100 runs) in his very first match! He went on to play 67 Test matches, scoring 4,301 runs, including 12 centuries. Known for his calm style and powerful shots, Rohit was admired not just for his batting but also for his leadership as captain.
Recently, though, Rohit wasn’t in great form in Test matches. In the last 19 innings, he scored only one century. Earlier this year, he even dropped himself from a Test match against Australia. This made many people think that big changes were coming for the Indian Test team.
Even though Rohit is saying goodbye to Tests, he’s not done with cricket! He will continue to play in ODIs, where he holds some amazing records, like the highest individual score in ODI history — 264 runs in one match! He is also the only player to have scored three double centuries (200+ runs) in ODIs.
Now, with Rohit stepping down, India will need a new Test captain. Two names being talked about are Jasprit Bumrah, the fast bowler, and Shubman Gill, a young and talented batsman. But both have their challenges — Bumrah has a big workload, and Gill doesn’t have much experience leading in Test matches.
India’s next big Test series is in England, starting on June 20, 2025. Fans are excited to see how the new team and captain will do.
