Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire and a hostage release deal to end over a year of fighting in the Gaza Strip. The announcement was made by U.S. President Joe Biden and Qatar’s prime minister on Wednesday. The deal follows a week of intense talks led by Qatar, the United States, and Egypt.
President Biden said in a statement that the agreement will stop the violence in Gaza, bring much-needed humanitarian aid to Palestinians, and reunite hostages with their families after being held for over 15 months. He also expressed relief that the war is coming to an end, saying it was the only way forward. He confirmed that some Americans will be among the first hostages to be released and shared his excitement about welcoming them home.
The White House announced that the deal is set to begin on Sunday. News of the agreement sparked celebrations in Gaza, with people gathering in the streets and firing gunshots into the air in joy.
A young woman from Gaza City expressed her happiness, saying that after experiencing so much loss and hardship, she finally feels joy. An elderly man shared his gratitude, calling the deal a sign of hope.
