“Private Schools in Karnataka Overcharged Students by Rs 345 Crore: CAG Report”
A new report from India’s Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has revealed that private schools in Karnataka overcharged students by a total of Rs 345.80 crore during the 2020-21 COVID-19 pandemic. The CAG report, presented to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, criticized the state government for its failure to regulate school fees, which the report states violated court orders. The report highlighted that the Department of School Education and Literacy had no system in place to monitor or track the fees collected by private unaided schools, leading to widespread overcharging.
The CAG report further criticized the government’s lack of oversight in regulating online schools, which contributed to educational inequality. In addition to the school-related findings, a separate CAG report on health disclosed that COVID-19 drugs worth Rs 17.79 crore remained undelivered to the government by the end of March 2022. The report noted significant delays in the delivery of COVID-19 drugs and equipment, with delays ranging from one to 252 days. Furthermore, the CAG reported that details of equipment worth Rs 405 crore had not been provided to them.
