Fare Meters Mandatory for Ahmedabad Auto-Rickshaws from January 1

In a move aimed at regularizing auto-rickshaw fares and addressing public complaints about overcharging, the Police Commissioner of Ahmedabad has issued a notification making fare meters mandatory for all auto-rickshaws in the city, effective from January 1, 2025. This decision follows numerous complaints from passengers regarding high fares charged by auto drivers.
To ensure compliance, the city’s auto drivers have been given a deadline of December 31, 2024, to install fare meters in their vehicles. The notification emphasizes that strict action will be taken against those who fail to install the meters or charge fares beyond what is indicated on the meter. Legal action will be pursued against drivers caught overcharging passengers, aiming to provide a more transparent and regulated fare system for the city’s commuters.
