Sarus Crane Population Rises 14% in Gujarat

Share

The Sarus crane population in Gujarat has seen a significant rise of 14% this year, a promising sign for the conservation of this vulnerable species. The latest census, conducted on June 21, 2023, recorded 1,431 Sarus cranes in the Anand and Kheda districts, including 141 juveniles. This marks a notable increase from last year’s count of 1,254 birds. The Sarus cranes, which are primarily found in the wetlands of Kheda, have been the focus of dedicated conservation efforts due to their vulnerable status. Since 2015, the population of these birds has grown by an impressive 186%, rising from around 500 to the current figure.

This success is largely attributed to collaborative conservation efforts between the forest department and local villagers in 164 villages. These communities are part of the Rural Sarus Protection Group (RSPG), established by United Phosphorus Limited (UPL) under the Sarus Conservation Project. The partnership has played a crucial role in preserving and enhancing the habitat of these cranes, promoting coexistence between humans and wildlife. The joint efforts have not only helped boost Sarus crane numbers but also reinforced the importance of community involvement in conservation initiatives. This approach has been key to ensuring the species’ survival and growth in the region.
